Recess

Airplanes, backpacks
Small hands, big snacks
Us five, let's move to the Midwest
19 right now, one less mother in the crowd
And we don't travel like we used to do

Being a kid was so lovely
Run as fast as you could to nothing
But birthdays get harder every year
Caution the shame of running
If not for the race you’re gunning to be the missing face on the newspaper's last tier

Cause they don't give recess in real life
And I learned that all too fast one night
So I'll think of the good times and pray for that rewind

Sinking right now
Missing your warmth in this house
Cooking apple pie just like we used to
But nothing’s going right without your sweet tooth

And some people say they know you're right there between the walls
They see your face in the park or hear you down the hall
So where am I going wrong if all I can do is write a song?
Hoping I'll feel you when it's done

Cause they don't give recess in real life
And I learned that all too fast one night
So I'll think of the good times and pray for that rewind

They don't give recess in real life
Though if they wanted to, I’d still be with you
